Because that's the most widely available reproduction today.  What year is your car?  There are differences beyond slotted vs dotted.  As for being hard to find...yes.  Nice original dashes are hard to find no matter what year you're looking for.

There is, however, an alternative dash repro being made in small quantities these days.  The texture isn't quite right, and it doesn't have any speaker holes at all, but depending on your needs it may be a good option.  Details here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=479677
