Yes, that can happen with today's gas. It would also happen with the 
gas of 50 years ago. It's simply that gasoline left open to the air 
won't completely evaporate; there are some non-volatile components 
that are always left behind. Those will form a gummy residue that can 
clog things up if there's enough of it.

In most cases, there's not enough residue to cause a big problem: The 
incoming fresh gas eventually dissolves the old residue and you're 
back to normal. In extreme cases you might need to take things apart 
and clean them with carb cleaner.
