OK, I grabbed the seal again and the depth gauge,
.404" from the collar to the end of the shank.

You're right, there is a stated spec for the bearing position, and 
there is a depth of the seal, but those two dimensions allow for some 
overlap, which is impossible. So the stated spec must be wrong.

The question is: What is the correct spec? There's no stop.
