$2000 is probably reasonable to get a rebuilt engine properly 
installed in your car. Like Bob, I would tend to go with rebuilding 
YOUR engine, simply because it avoids headaches due to parts that are 
not quite right for Type 3s. And because it sounds like this guy 
knows what he's doing.

With no engine, the value declines dramatically because your pool of 
potential buyers is much smaller. Any remaining value depends 
completely on the condition of the body and on how original it still 
is. Having the old FI parts helps. If the body is rusty the sale 
price could drop to zero. If it's good, the price could be $1000 or 
even more, if it's pristine.

There's a difference between selling price and the value to you. The 
value to you depends on what you will spend to replace it. If you 
like the car and are likely to spend more to replace it than to 
repair it, then you should repair it.
