[T3] Backfire

I think this came up not too long ago but...the my records must not have the right subject line to find anything.
Question: 
 If FI '72 Std engine backfires when suddenly decelerating from fast highway speed, without clutch in, just taking foot off accelerator, what does that indicate?   Timing?  Clean distributor? Use higher octane gas? Other?
