Yes, it's not often my driving technique has the car rolling violently
enough to move the clock in an axial mode. ;-)
You're right, it's a useful way to check if a pendulum (transistorised)
clock will run.

You're right; I had that backwards.

Yes, odd, but then I don't claim to understand this fully. I THOUGHT I had
an answer, but now that the resistances are the other way around, I'm lost
again.

Sometimes it just takes the step function of applying the voltage to get the
late style clocks working. I also find that taking the late clocks out of
the dash, while keeping the power applied, and then twisting them quickly
back and forth about a vertical axis, will often start them. I'm surprised
that normal road vibration doesn't seem to do the job, but that vibration
doesn't contain much motion about the vertical axis.
