I have a friend who spent his career working in the lead-acid battery
business, mostly for Johnson Controls in Milwaukee and Exide (in
Atlanta?) Yes, they made batteries for LOTS of different labels, but
they weren't all made to the same specs. Unless you work for one of
those companies and know the designs, there's no way to tell the real
quality, although length of guarantee is likely to mean something.

The Sears batteries used to be good, but I've also had good luck with
some from K-Mart, before their store here closed. These days, I'd buy
from a local place called Farm & Fleet, but for some odd reason, they
just don't carry any Group 42 batteries. Interstate can be a crap
shoot, because those batteries tend to sit on the displays at low
volume retailers, so you have no idea how old they are.
