Thanks Jim I am sort of ruling this out now and moving toward other possible causes. As always this has been good info I have worried about the charging system for a while and not so much after this thread of messages.

I suspect the MS system has good internal voltage regulation and is rather insensitive to the car's system voltage. It's just the D-jet system that is bothered by low system voltage.
