With a late case (large oil passages and dual oil pressure valves) 
and the late oil cooler (311 B version, stamped on top of the cooler) 
you use the thin gaskets, typically red these days, and no spacers. 
However I find that to crush the gasket a bit too much for my taste, 
so I usually put 1 thin 6 mm wavy washer as a thin spacer between the 
case and the cooler, on each bolt/stud.

If you've got different parts, the answer may be different.
