If you use a compressor for a modern car they pull very little HP from
an engine compared to the original ones used with the dealer installed.
100 degrees going down the road with the windows down in Utah is
different than doing that in 95-100 degree here in Alabama with our
humidity (which is our weather right now). Clementine gets driven very
little this time a year. I still think there is a way to take out the
fresh box in the dash on our cars and re-fab one that would still fit
but could house the evaporator. This would be really good for a 72 or
later like mine that all ready has two vents in the dash and even the 71
and earlier could just do away with the ash tray for another vent (if
you don't smoke). Then plum a couple more vents you could hang under the
dash. Also you wouldn't have the big under dash unit blocking the wires
and other things under the dash for service like Jim mention earlier and
with a set up like this you should only have to drill smaller holes than
the dealer set up for the two lines feeding the evaporator if you do it
right. Maybe one of these days I can figure it out but I think if you
could do all this that would fix most of the issues everyone has with
the dealer retro AC set up.
