[T3] Factory Steering Wheel?

When were the new year models in USA showrooms, Jim? We had them on sale
from the beginning of August back then, and they arrived in dealerships a
few weeks before to allow time for pre-delivery de-waxing and inspection.
There must have been some pre-production of the new spec. for this to
happen.
I've only seen one Type 3 with confusion over chassis number and production
date-code, which made me wonder, but it might have been a 'ringed' vehicle
anyway. I've seen a couple of those where the body and floorpan didn't
match, including one with a Fastback chassis number on a Squareback body!

Of course, it may not have been obvious to most purchasers that they were
getting the old model! It's also not a bad idea to get some of the changes
out there for customer testing, before too many need recall! I'm sure VW
aren't guilty of that......

My German VW production engineer friend might have supplied some answers,
but I've not been in contact with him for many years.

My very early '72 had the '72 engine and FI, but it had the 2-spoke steering
wheel, early style seat rails, and silver wiper arms. Yes, I was surprised,
too. I don't remember the gauges, but I think they were grey faced. It's
odd, but I don't think any of those things changed at exactly the same time.

Yes, the VW diagnostic socket and the late style brake calipers were
introduced in late '71. I had one of those, too.

I'll check the parts listings for the exact timing, but we've been down this
road before.
