I'd really like to take our '69 FI/AT Sunroof Squareback to this
invasion, but it hasn't been out of storage since shortly after Dave
Hall and I drove it to the first Invasion in 2002. That's 14 years of
not moving....
So.... To get things going, I bought a new battery, as this car had
none, then trickle charged it for a few days, just to make sure it
was topped up. Yesterday, I took the new battery out and installed
it.
The engine cranked over, so it wasn't seized, and the oil light went
out, but it didn't start. I got one relay, but nothing from the fuel
pump relay, so I jumpered the pump. That drew a lot of current, but
the pump didn't run, so the pump is frozen. Today I went back out
there with different tools, added some air to the nearly flat rear
tires, and tried the fuel pump again. That still doesn't work, but I
measured its current draw and it was over 9 amps. So it's still
connected but stalled.
The gas tank was full when I parked it, but the gauge reads 1/4 now,
so this could just be congealed gas, but I'm not expecting much of a
mess in there. Probably just needs to be taken apart and freed up.
I pulled the brain to see if there could be bad connections there and
checked the ground wire connection. That all looks good, and the
brain looks sparkly clean inside.
Checked the brake pedal, and the brakes still feel okay, thanks to
DoT-5 silicone brake fluid. That's a real relief and a blessing.
I'll go out there again with the Bosch D-jet tester to see if I can
see anything else, but I've contacted a friend with a trailer to try
to get the car home where I can work on the fuel pump.
So I'm trying to get this car ready for a long trip, but if that
doesn't pan out, I've already started the '71 a few times and I'm
sure it will make the drive if needed.
Fingers are crossed!
