VWs are so reliable these days we get 3years guarantee in the UK now instead of the 6months we got in the 60s!

VW originally recommended testing 
and/or replacing the brake fluid (the OE stuff was DoT-4) every 2 
years. 


VW isn't the only manufacturer that recommends replacing brake fluid every 2 years. GM and Honda also do that, as does Toyota. It's done for the reasons Jim mentioned. And with manufacturer warrantees going 10 yesrs and or 100,000 miles, it's only prudent to keep up with stuff.
