[T3] Thermostat linkage spring?

Ahh, I gave up having it as my only ride 25 years ago cause I couldnt get
everything quickly, I still rely on it for long trips and everyday hauls so
my current push is reliability but if it needs something I have backup.

The Golf may be coming to an end soon as my only winter ride, they were the
most common thing out there but finally, after 30 years, im just starting to
run into problems getting tires in that size, I purchased the last available
catalytic converter last year and the water pump pulley comes in 12
different flavors that nobody seems to be able to look up now.

Sigh! I miss the good ol days!

I have no way to cc the heads at this time so even though it might not be
recommended I will have to go with what I have. I need this car running
before tomorrow since I have no alternative transpiration. This town has no
AC VW resources that I know of and anything I do will have to be ordered.

the important part is weather its changing the compression ratio, cc it and
cc the old head, then you will have an idea of where your at.
This is important weather its stock FI, aftermarket or carbs. castings
changed over the years even with OEM stuff.

Thanks Keith, I know where this head came from it was on one of my early
1600s it was purchased new and used for a very short time till I built the
motor up to a 1915cc. Nothing has been done to it, it's all stock and I have
the matching other side and can replace it if I need to. This motor is
running Megasquirt EFI so I am not worried if it's not a type3 head.

Thanks,
Daniel Du Vall

id HIGHLY reccomend NOT haphazardly replacing heads, if the plug stripped,
fix it, install a helicoil or an insert as Id reccomend.
who knows what CC the new head is, or compares with the old, some were
stepped, some have been fly cut (most by now) and the compression ratio
could be changed drastically if you dont know. Many aftermarket heads have
different castings too... so many engines blow up and nobody knows why

and the root cause comes down to details like this, which really arent
details after all.

Finally had to do it. The passenger side number one spark plug since I
received this 1972 Squareback has always bothered me in how it tightened
down, Well on Saturday I was checking the valves and had removed the number
one spark plug to make sure I was at TDC number one and also see how I was
doing with fuel air mixture. When it came time to put it back in it went in
real easy and never tightened down. Luckily I had a spare set of heads and
so I pulled it and am in the process of replacing it.

Now a long while back I had removed the tin on that side to remove a washer
that had fallen into the intake valve on number one, In the process of doing
so I removed a small spring from the linkage and could not remember where it
went. Does anyone know where it was? Since I have it all open I want to
place it back in.

Here is a link to a pic of the spring:
