Dennis Stiefel's 72 video.

One fellow said never to use the gaskets between the cylinders and case because they degrade and allow .001 to maybe.002 movemnt and cause the cylinders to pound the heads . He used permatex . He also said he liked silicone for case halves and the cylinders to case.

I just went by what the Bentley said when I did mine well before I had internet in 98 and have not had any issues that I can tell. I did coat the gaskets with some Ford product we used long ago as a sealer . It was similar to permatex yet thinner . He had an engine stand aand when installing the cylinders and then heads he left the engine up right so to me it seemed he was working harder than needed . He also sealed around all 6 case half studs under the washers . I thought the O-ring seals sealed them between the case halves.

I would think VW knew what worked and as far as I know owning only a Bentley and Haynes that the gaskets were fine to use. Can't say what official VW repair manuels said about it.

Seems to me with the parts like bearings and others that are not as good from what I've read as they used to be that doing a rebuild would be a real fight these days let alone the cost of the parts that are now 4 times what I paid for german parts in 97& 98 . Plus I could get the proper head to runner gaskets and runner short boots back then.
