[T3] Why is it that when I got my 73 SB I never had to turn the key several times to prime the system .

I need to add a switch pretty easy. Yet up until 2011 even if I didn't drive it everyday I never had to do this. Now if it sits for one day I need to cycle the ign at least 6 to 7 times before it will start . The pump runs fine and it's been on this car since I got it in 85 . I know if the pumps check valve leaks it will loose the prime . I've run it with a fuel pressure gauge then shut it off and the next day it still has at least 18 PSI on the gauge . If the check valve goes completely then the pump will not put out pressure is this true?
