It didn't look rotted (yes, I've seen that) but it looked like it had broken/fused 
right across a serious middle section of the braid. My guess is that the break 
had been somehow progressive and the awful sounding starter was due to 
the starter getting/losing/getting/losing... power as the break arced in its last 
dying moments.

I also pulled the starter bushing and found it somewhat worn. It wasn't all 
that bad, so I put it back with the worn area toward the flywheel, leaving an 
unworn section to support the shaft when engaged.
