interesting, havent seen one die other than by corrosion,
but these OEM parts are getting older and older by the day.

It didn't look rotted (yes, I've seen that) but it looked like it had
broken/fused
right across a serious middle section of the braid. My guess is that the
break
had been somehow progressive and the awful sounding starter was due to
the starter getting/losing/getting/losing... power as the break arced in its
last
dying moments.
I also pulled the starter bushing and found it somewhat worn. It wasn't all
that bad, so I put it back with the worn area toward the flywheel, leaving
an
unworn section to support the shaft when engaged.
