Both sides connect to the same central cooling air intake bellows, so the 
louvers don't tell you anything about the sides of the engine. But, if there 
was even the slightest breeze blowing against the driver's side, that would 
push cool air IN those louvers and hot air OUT on the passenger side. It 
wouldn't take much to make that easily perceptable.

Regarding your timing light, it sounds like something there must have failed.

I've never had a problem with my Sears Penske timing light. There are 
several available on ebay for cheap. Go to ebay and search for penske 
timing light. There are 2 versions: the early one does not have the inductive 
pickup. It works just as well, but is a bit more trouble to use. I have had both, 
but I sold my non-inductive one long ago, when the inductive one went on 
sale.

Buy one of the inductive ones. Just make sure the photo shows the inductive 
pickup that clips around the SP wire. I'm looking at one right now that is 
going for $21.95 with free shipping.
