and of course, how many more years will I be able to drive my Squareback as
a daily driver? I was hoping the rest of my life... and with what I have
invested in its next engine....

What I read was things like "up to 40 times more." I believe that I've also
seen numbers as low as 2-3x for the lower limit. I suspect it depends a LOT
on what kind of driving we're talking about, but the lower limits don't get
as
much press because they're not as impressive. Keep in mind that 40x more
is still less than 1/2 of what 2008 cars were allowed.

I doubt that will happen, at least that quickly, but didn't I recently hear
that
Volvo is planning to move entirely to hybird and electric cars for the 2019
model year? Maybe they've been listening to Germany, GB, and France.

Very interesting question. At that point the fuel consumption point moves
from the cars to the power plants, so the overall consumption may not
change that much while reducing pollution, but the type of fuel consumed
will change from petroleum to more natural gas and coal.
