The OE defroster grids consisted of a brown non-conductive primer on the
glass with a silver conductive strip on top of the primer. The metallic
conductive upper layer tended to corrode and disappear, leaving the brown
primer.

The heated rear window was rated at 45 W. With a system voltage of 14.2 V,
that means that the window should have a resistance of ~4.5 Ohms. As the
metallic portion erodes away, the resistance goes up. So you can judge the
condition of the defroster by measuring its resistance. If you've got one that
measures 10 Ohms or so, that's excellent. If it measures over 20 Ohms it's
worthless. By now, most of them measure infinity.

There are kits that provide conductive paint that you can use to repair the
conductive traces. I think that's possible, but it would be laborious and it
would have to be painstaking to achieve an result to be proud of. There may
be special tape out there, made for easy pinstriping, that might make this
easier, but I'm not sure about that.

This would be an interesting challenge for John J's pinstriping talents.
