There may have been some minor exceptions to this, but AFAIK, bias ply 
tires in our era always used the inch system: 6.00-15, while radial ply tires 
used the metric system: 165R15. So there never was a 6.00R15 tire. Other 
than the ply design, 6.00-15 and 165R15 are the same size.

Not too wide for your rims, but probably too tall. Increased width comes with 
increased diameter, unless it's a reduced profile tire, like 175/70R15. 
"Normal" 175R15 will lift the car a bit and make the speedo and odo read 
low, while 175/70R15s will probably undershoot, making the speedo and odo 
read high.
