Since Jim replaced the Axle Beam, in July 2014, he has me a
bit "apprehensive" about ever towing the '69 Square, ever again. With a
modest revision of the way the baseplate attaches to the axle beam, I think
it would be fine to tow. But ????
As Jim noted:
1.) The applied force of the baseplate "pulling" the car via the front
axle beam, is far different than the drive wheels "pushing" the mass.
2.) and ... the needed "clamping force" of the "U" bolts on the shell of
the axle beam makes "worry-free" towing the Square, a bit suspect, too.
I think getting the beam replaced probably would make it fine. I've used a
modified super beetle tow bar on my Notch in the past without issues, and
the 70 Square I've got sitting here still has a super beetle plate attached
to it, that's been in place for almost 10 years, but I don't know how much
action it's seen.
I only mention it, as if the beam has any rust, the structure is partly
compromised, and can fail.
Just a couple of thoughts from working with/dealing with rust on vehicles
from the salt belt. Don't think this is limited to the east coast/mid west
either, but coastal cars can be affected as well due to salt in the air.
