The judicious use of a "fire wrench" can be your best friend.
But, heed Jim's caution.

I like to contain the "heat overflow" with some scrap pieces of metal
placed around things that you don't want to melt or scorch.  If you can
direct the flame to ONLY the part which you want to heat, and away from
other parts is the best.

With the torch NOT lit, do a "test/dry run" to see what position for the
heat source is best.
