Crazy, huh? Even later on, when they switched to the more familiar
style of tie rod ends, the service interval for lubricating king and
link pin beams remained 1500mi. Such luxury with our type 3s to only be
asked to grease every 6000 miles!

I took a 16k mile road trip in my Variant a few years back, and I
brought along a grease gun. I looked at this extra maintenance as more
of a fun quirk than a chore. I was less enthusiastic about the tie rod
end that I had to replace in a parking lot.
