VW said replace, but I never do.

The only thing that wears on them is the rubbing block. I have a fixture that I 
use to reset them, but neither Bosch nor VW ever gave specs on that, so my 
fixture is something that I had to design and machine myself. I reset them as 
a matter of course in rebuilding an FI distributor.

I would almost never replace with new. They are expensive and there's no 
good reason to do this. Unlike ign points, they last forever. If you have a pair 
that's really destroyed, I have good used & adjusted ones.
