Nice to use stainless banding. I used some scrap band from bundles of bricks at a building supplies company - free but not stainless.

You'd want to be very careful about this, as vigorous cleaning may do more 
harm than good. You don't want to damage them. Also, keep in mind that a 
little oil on these helps keep the heat exchangers underneath from rusting. 
That's why those heat exchangers all tend to rust, up on the upper/front 
ends, where the insulation doesn't go.

I have a few very good used (Arizona) heat exchangers of most versions if 
anyone needs one. Not cheap, but quite reasonable.

The 4 bands that secure the insulation have all started to rust away by now. 
If you have the "buckles" that VW used to secure these, I have some 
stainless bands that I use to replace the broken ones. I don't have new 
buckles.
