[T3] Running rough Etc

'71 Sqbk: Std. :   At end of longish hot day trip, car started to feel like it needed more gas to move into higher gears...and even seemed to be using extra effort on hills.  At home, tidied up all the connections, double-checked timing, but still kinda rough.Parked overnight but then trouble starting.  It cranked, but didn't catch.  Battery, just re-charged two days ago, seemed strong...but maybe something to do with getting gas?  Double checked all the connections, grounds etc etc...AND after just turning the key a bunch of times to hear the fuel pump squeak get higher and higher pitched...til it was practically inaudible...THEN it started...after just a little resistance.
Let it sit a few minutes...and it started again....but it still doesn't Feel Right.  Idle is ok.  Oil light doesn't flicker.

Where else to search for suspect(s)?   Fuel pump?  Starter wires?
