IIRC, there's no input bushing on that shaft. The only bearings are some 
needle bearings between the shaft and some of the gears, and a ball 
bearing at the far end. Getting to any of them is a big project. It could also be 
needle bearings on the other shaft, which are even harder to get to.

OTOH, if you decide to dive into this, I made some tools quite a few years 
ago that would help get those apart and back together again.

Are you getting the 2 relay clicks when you turn the key ON?
