For '73 the front footwell/defroster openings are cable controlled from one of 
the center levers. Those wires run thru tubes along the floor, under the 
carpet, to spaces underfoot which are covered by thin, rectangular steel 
plates, which you can just pry up with your fingers. Under those covers you'll 
find couplings that connect the lever wires to short wires that run to the 
footwell openings. the couplings are the same as used on the rear footwell 
wires.

The lever wires often rust to the steel tubes they run in. I fixed mine by 
sliding a length of teflon tubing over the wire.

I believe I may have a replacement for the lever wire here. If not, I think I see 
them on ebay occasionally. The seller doesn't seem to know what they 
actually are, since they are just a one-year part. You could also make one 
from an old rear heater cable, but it would be a shame to cut up a good rear 
cable to replace one of these short ones.
