I didnt remove the oring, but rubber after all these years sometimes isnt
good, ive had them slip often.  yea, I should probably make a tool too,
once I decide where I want the inner stop I should never have to move it
again.

There's usually an O-ring there to prevent slippage. Had you removed that? 
There should be no need for glue.

I made a special hollow tool that allows me to turn the middle adjustment 
while holding the innermost one still, and vice versa.
