Fortunately, the slip rings didn’t move to far, but Ill watch those wires
carefully,
Ill make a good one out of it, but wish Id started with the original core!

The bearings and brushes are easy to fix, but if the slip rings have been
moved on the shaft, that's a potential problem. The connection between the
rotor wires and the slip rings is one of an alternator's weak spots. If you
press the rings back into position, those wires have now been stressed
twice. Check them carefully.

I agree. This is really disappointing.
