Oh, thanks, that's a much more informative photo. I had mistakenly taken 
your first photo to be an inside view.

So this is the early style, much more complicated and expensive than what 
VW went to later. Since your steering tube is much longer than the later 
ones, it goes all the way thru the firewall and the extra box with the seal, and 
this seal must be the 311 415 603 part I found in the parts book.

I figure any day I learn something new is a good day, so this must be one of 
the good ones. Now if I can just manage to remember it.
