All 12 V VWs from our generation used Group 42 batteries. That includes 
Beetles, busses, Type 3s, and Type 4s. Lately it seems that Group 42 has 
been discontinued by some manufacturers, but I don't know what the 
replacement is. I would check with your FLAPS and see what they list for a 
'67-78 Beetle.

I believe there is a later Group that is about the same as a Group 42 except 
that it has clamp-downs on the ends in addition to the sides. That MAY be a 
Group 90.

I keep meaning to look into this, but I haven't so far. Let me know what you 
find. I just checked the Interstate web site and found that they still list their 
Group 42.

Has anyone else looked into this?
