Id never get it together if I put tape around the nipple, and never get the
braid in if there were more than one layer of that, and that’s 
Not the sealing surface anyway.  These are tight tolerance connectors.

My cousin, a plumber, told me to wrap tapered fittings with 6-8 full wraps
of tape.
I had been using 3-4, and I haven't had a leak since.
