The Part Number I have for the Brushed Aluminium Bonnet Emblem / Badge ( no groove or black paint ) on my 1972 Type 3 Variant ( Squareback ) is :
113 853 601 D
That was for a New Part supplied by a UK VW Dealership in about 1991
Just out of interest, what sort of Valuations are put on Type 3s in the US please ? We have something here called “ Agreed Valuation Insurance “. Our 1972 Type 3 Automatic Variant ( Squareback ) which has had a “ Body Off “ Restoration, lives inside our Garage and does not go out in the rain, has just been Valued at £15,000 by an Expert Valuer.

I always thought they were chrome over pot metal, so chrome cleaner should
be fine. IIRC, there were 2 versions of that emblem: that one and an earlier
one. I THINK the groove in the one in your photo should have black paint in
it. The earlier one did not have that groove.
According to the parts book, the early one was a 113 part and was used up
thru '69.

My ?73 version had no groove but the flat surface was a sort of brushed finish. My April ?71 and October ?71 both had the black painted ring.
I guess that may be different in the UK from the USA market.

Mine is 113 853 601 B PuC. I don't see a trace of paint in the grove.
It was on the car when I bought it.
Here's one with paint in the grove. He says it's a 311 #

I think Dave's memory is better than mine. The one in your photo must be
the early one, correct for '67 once you add some black paint in that groove.

I can't explain all these differences. The parts book only shows what was
available as replacement parts at the time those book pages were printed,
so much of what it shows may be parts that have superceeded the originals.
If you've got a good original, paint the groove black and reinstall it.

My '68 has the groove in the emblem, with what looks like traces of black paint in it.
