[T3] How's the trip going?

We pulled Sophy's engine and tore it down to the point we could pull the heads. No obvious cause of the 3 exhaust valves tightening to the point I could not adjust them. Only causes of excessive valve tightening the brain trust here could come up with was valve stretch, wear of the seating surface on the valve, valve seat wear, or the valve seats pounding into the heads. Everything else would cause loose valves like bent pushrods, pushrod end wear, cup wear on the sticker arm or lifter, etc. Everything looked good with only expected normal wear.

We are at a loss. Will sleep on it and take a fresh look in the morning.

Thanks for the update John, yea, Im not a social media guy, this list IS my social media! I still have my Flip phone.... remember the first invasion
When I think YOU were the only one WITH a phone? Wow! 20 years....

Facebook wont let us non-user dead-beats browse anymore, but the Samba I can do of course so links are appreciated!!! Sorry to hear about the Sophy woes, but
She's got to be getting up there in mileage now and if those are the original heads with that build im not surprised, ive had sinking seats on past heads when they get old
Up around 60 or 70K, especially with aftermarket heads.

Head swap in the parking lot again... Oh, Jim and I are really gonna miss that one!!!

And at least the Oh Deer! Wasn’t with Sophy... sometimes fate steps in and changes your plans for a reason 😊

Keith

Hey Keith,

You need to join the social media future. Lots of pics on Facebook. <g>

Trip is good, but Sophy had some issues with the heat Monday going across Nebraska and into Cheyenne. She was down on some power and when I checked her out on Tuesday morning, I found 3 of her 4 exhaust valves were tight....so tight that I couldn't get and lash even with the adjusters all the way out. Interestingly, the only one that I could adjust still was #3.

We weighed our options and decided to rent a UHaul truck and tow dolly to complete the trip. We are currently in Lakeview, OR getting ready for the final cruise down to Crescent City.

Other than clipping a small mule deer that bolted out in front of us on the way down into Lakeview last night (no real damage to the rental truck thankfully, but I don't think the deer faired as well) the drive is going well.

Alex from ISP has a new set of cylinder heads with him for Sophy, so hopefully will back driving her by Friday night.

I will post some photos on the Samba and links here over the weekend.
