Dual carb Type 3 engines have a thick maybe 10 mm, phenolic spacer/gasket between their
short intake manifolds and the carbs. FI engines have a somewhat thinner, maybe ~5 mm,
phenolic spacer/gasket between the heads and the intake runners. The function of both is to
insulate the component above, carb or injector, from the heat of the head, especially in the
heat soak after shutdown.
In Beetles, there are no sensitive components in that area just above the head, so no need
for a more expensive insulating gasket.
It's rather easy to check for the wrong gaskets here, since the metal gaskets are only about 1
mm thick.
