The reason I bought a 2008 was to avoid the Bluetec urea-injection
system that Mercedes started using in '09.  That system is problematic
and failure-prone by now, and also means you don't even get a cheesy
"donut" spare tire because that's where they put the DEF tank on the
diesel models.  Still has a catalytic converter and diesel particulate
filter in the exhaust, which is nice because I don't have smoke out the
tailpipes unless it's doing a DPF regen.

My father has a 2017 GMC Canyon with the 2.8 diesel and a DEF system,
gets 28-29MPG on the highway by itself and still over 20MPG towing the
car hauler and one of the antique Chevy's.  I don't know if a gas
version of that truck could tow like that.

Longer range between fill-ups than the gas version is a bonus. My car is rated 18/24MPG vs the same-year ML350 (gas) at 15/20MPG, and going by the current prices at the nearby Costco where I usually fill up the diesel is slightly cheaper to drive than an otherwise-identical gas version would be. I did the math before buying it and it still mostly holds up
