I use some 3/8" polyurethane foam that I bought a supply of from a local upholstery supply
place many years ago. The main requirement is that it must be able to hold up in the
presense of heat and oil. The engines I've built with this have survived for decades, much
longer than the OE material did.
The original German stuff was made of chopped up foam scraps, glued together. While it
seemed to survive the heat and oil, it fell apart when exposed to any kind of parts cleaner
fluid, which was inevitable when cleaning up the cooler in the course of an engine rebuild.
The parts cleaner seemed to dissolve the glue, and the stuff just fell apart.
It's VERY important to have something in there. It's necessary to keep any cooling air from
bypassing all the cooling functions.
Hi Tim,
This is the second list email that we've gotten from you that looks like a reply to something,
but I never saw that something. The first seemed to be a response to a Samba thread from
5-15 years ago. Were these messages actually meant for the email list? I hope you'll
contribute more, but I'd like to see all sides of the conversation.
