If you heard it, youd say bearing too, it has that "sound". It makes noise
Sitting there with the clutch engaged in neutral, only the input shaft is
turning at that point so that rules out a lot.

The things you describe probably would have grenaded it quite a while ago,
its been making some noise for the past couple years,
Maybe 15K mi or so then got worse in June, but has held steady for the past
1500 miles or so. Hopefully it has another 1500 in it at least as
Im going to Richmond end of next week... thought of taking the Subaru but
then Id have to buy new summer tires for it and those
Big tires are major expensive.

Don't understand why you remain fixed on bearings. Sure, one of the
possibilities is a bad bearing, but there are lots of other possibilities.
Consider a few:

Insufficient shimming of the R/P, allowing them to move and no longer mesh
correctly.

Input shaft pushed in, releasing snap ring, letting reverse gear slide
rearward, and now it can run up against the ring gear.

Pinion main bearing insufficiently locked, so it can back out, now not
meshing properly and misaligned with Ring and ALL the gears on that shaft.

Forward end of either shaft not properly locked, allowing movement and
whining.

Wrong nose cone installed on late body, allowing shaft to move and come out
of alignment.

And this is just off the cuff, spur of the moment, etc. Have you tried
draining the oil and checking for excess metal on the drain plug magnet?

Right now the only data you have is that it's noisy. Unfortunately, I don't
know of any easy way to narrow things down, short of disassembly. I guess
one thing you might do would be to push an inspection snake in the fill hole
and check out the R/P, the pinion securing bolts or special nut, and the
reverse gear. You could also just grab the output flanges and see if they
have any axial play (they should not.)
