Yes, Dying breed! It wont let me wait too much longer anyway... maybe if
we have an Indian summer I can pull the engine out. Since im not tripling
up the garage anymore, things can sit apart during the winter now.

A small bit of advice.

One year I hesitated to send my Porsche engine to Harry Pelton. One year
turned into two years. Then Harry passed away.

Send the transmission sooner than later.

Well I think I Solved the biggest issue with getting the tranny fixed,
SOMEONE TO DO IT.
There's a guy about an hour away that has been building them since the 70's,
races and restores VW's, and after Chatting with him for some time he's one
of the last of the dying breed that knows this stuff and has the tools to do
it, And at very reasonable rates.

SO, if it makes it to Richmond and back, after towing the trailer back from
the camp Saturday I may TRY to pull it out before the winter, more likely a
spring thing As I really don’t want to have to remember how to put it back
together in the spring, Stock... OK, the 2056 has some nuances....

Apparently there are a number of bearings on the main shaft and idler gears
that could be the culprit. Sigh!
Ive been trying to get my Dad's Tbird done for 10 years now and stuff keeps
distracting me, that and the weather, rained Almost every weekend this
summer and most of the weeks too.

That was a LONG time ago, not sure if I tried. That particular bearing is
extremely special, and it may have only been made for VWAG. It was the late
pinion bearing version with the large diameter threads. Buying generic is
certainly a reasonable thing to do; we have a good local bearing house. At
that time it was named Wisconsin Bearing, with many warehouses around the
state. Now it's Motion Industries, which I assume just means that it's part
of a larger conglomerate, not always a good sign. They've come up with
things off the shelf that I couldn't find in catalogs.

I saved the old outer bearing race. I'll check it to see if it has any sort
of marking on it. ISTR seeing them for sale on ebay, made by FAG, for much
less in the last couple decades, but those are probably just places trying
to get rid of obsolete stock that will never sell otherwise.
