I believe the difference is due to the fact that the torque converter adds a 
significant amount of load to an AT car. The 2L Porsches and Vanagons are 
MT. While I agree that 0.1 HP doesn't sound like much, it's still about a 15% 
increase.  

It's similar to the fact that fractional HP AC motors are available in 1/4, 1/3, 
1/2, (2/3?) and 3/4 HP versions, which may seem like a silly amount of 
variety, but they are sold in huge quantities to manufacturers who don't want 
to waste a single penny on something that they buy by the millions.
