  Hello all,
Technically I'm not a new type 3 owner... but my son is now, thanks
to Doug Brashear. I got my first Type 3 sometime in the early 2000's, a '71
Fastback that had been sitting since 1987 when it was in an accident. A few
years later I acquired a '68 Squareback that was about to be parted out. I
drove it for a few years and sold it to another VW friend. Soon after I got
my Fastback I found this list, as I was already on the Type 2 list and knew
I needed a similar source of quality information. I have since decided that
this list, with its extremely knowledgeable members, has ranked as the most
reliable source of common-sense VW know-how. Thank you to all the long time
list members that have contributed to that: Jim Adney, Keith Parks, Russ
Wolfe (RIP), B Fye, Bob, Toby (whatever happened to him?), John Jaranson,
and I'm sure others that I'm forgetting. Without those willing to
contribute and take the time to share their knowledge, this list would have
no purpose.

When Doug Brashear sent his email regarding his Fastback, I immediately
thought of my son Alex, who will turn 16 this fall, and has ridden in many
of my VW's. He takes after me in my quest to fix stuff and appreciates
vintage stuff (electronics, music, cars). I quickly asked Alex if he would
be interested and after he confirmed that he was, I sent Doug a message
introducing myself and letting him know Alex would be sending him an email
as well. One thing led to another and about a month ago we drove to
Virginia to meet Doug and bring the Fastback home.

The Fastback looked just as good in person as it did in the emailed
pictures, and it is clear that Doug has cared for it and maintained it well
over the past 15+ years. We drove home in the Fastback after admiring
Doug's other aircooled vehicles and made the 3 hour journey with no
problems and excellent fuel mileage. Doug's generosity still overwhelms me-
he not only gifted the car to Alex, but he included spare parts, manuals,
tools and a sense of responsibility to care for the car as much as he has.
He even made sure we had a full tank of gas for the ride home! All that to
say, THANK YOU Doug! Alex gets his permit next month and we will begin
practicing his driving in the Fastback soon. Until then I will keep making
sure it gets properly exercised :).

I can't remember if attachments are allowed on the list, but here are a few
pictures.

I am looking forward to showing Alex how to work on his car and passing on
that knowledge to another generation.

Thanks again to Doug for his generous gift, and to this list for the
knowledge to work on it!
