I have no experience with them, but I'm skeptical, since I've heard that they 
do NOT fail safe. They work on the same wax plug principal as the 
thermostats in water cooled cars. Still, probably better than nothing.

I've been wondering if I could rebuild old OE ones, but that's on a WAY back 
burner. Something I may never get to, but don't throw your old one away.

I understand that cold weather is approaching in Winnipeg, but you can still 
check the charging system regulating voltage while parked in your garage. 
Have I sent you my charging system checking FAQ?
