I just checked the parts book, and it looks like there were no thermostats or 
air cooling control flaps in Type 3 engines up thru 1963. Starting in 1964, all 
Type 3s use a 111 119 159 A thermostat, which is the same one used by 
Beetles up thru 1974.

I suspect that Beetles after '74 used a different thermostat, not simply 
because they were FI, but because they needed to meet lower NOx emission 
standards.

Buses up thru '71 used the same thermostat.
