One thing that few people notice is how stiff the OE belts have gotten over
the years of our sweating into them. If you take them out and give them a
good washing in a bucket of water and laundry soap they will emerge
completely different, and MUCH easier to adjust.
I understand that everyone likes the more modern retracting belts, but I find
that the constant tension tends to make them chafe against my neck. The
'68-9 belts were a little harder to adjust and were actually the subject of a
recall because then tended to loosen on their own. The recall added an
extra little spring clip in the buckle to control this.
I actually like the '70-1 belts the best. They work well, are easy to adjust
once cleaned, and don't chafe my neck or shoulder.
I have a couple complete '72-3 retracting front belt sets, but the chrome
metal hardware is rusty. I believe I have offered the pair for $150. What does
ISP or CIP ask for theirs?
