[T3] Turn Signal Switch Assy

While waiting for parts to come in I'm trying to deal with a problem
with my turn signal switch. It was pretty hard to move. These
spring-loaded tabs are, I think, supposed to go into the slot in the
plate underneath.

As can be seen in the above picture, there are marks left on the
plate, I think the tabs were riding on top of the plate. I have tried
pushing the tabs in using a screwdriver but have been unable to get
them to seat.

What am I doing wrong?
