Now that I've had a day to think about this and look at your photos again, I
have a suggestion.
Cut a rectangle of clear plastic out of a smooth plastic container, like a water
bottle. Make it just wide enough to fit in the slot in the lower plate and long
enough to stick up thru the upper plate. It will form a partial tube. Slide the
upper plate over that and let it guide the spring loaded tabs into the slot.
Once everything is in position, pull the plastic piece out, leaving the tabs in
place.
You'll have to do this all over again once your new bearing insulator arrives,
but you'll have no trouble doing this a second time.
