Last year I replaced a rusted out muffler that was on a factory-rebuilt motor. If it wasn't genuine then it was a very detailed fake. Just for grins I cut it all the way open, and it was just an empty can except for two baffle plates. It was clear that there were never any internal pipes. This muffler came from a '72 Square so it looks like they might have dropped the pipes in the late models. perforated inner tube and outer<br>tube. It makes a big difference to the noise level. The main muffler<br>doesn't have that filling, but ISTR the genuine VW ones have pipes across<br>the inside of the main casing to produce a balanced 4-into-1 system. The<br>lengths of the upper pipes then match the extra distance through the heat<br>exchangers.<br><br>The aftermarket mufflers don't usually have those, which explains some of<br>the extra weight of the genuine VW ones. The heavier grade of steel helps<br>extend the longevity of the genuine ones.<br><br>The loss of interior insulation is bound to result in hotter exhaust boxes,<br>but on most cars there are heat shields over the system where the body is<br>close. The Type 3 muffler has an insulated heat protecting panel above to<br>prevent the rubber air-intake bellows getting melted - something to consider<br>with aftermarket systems.<br><br>Dave<br>UK VW Type 3&4
